About

Friends-a-Foot was formed in 2004 driven by an inspiration seen when one of the members was traveling in Scotland.  There, a group of 5 Canadian women were trekking in the highlands of Scotland and having a wonderful time.  Hence the seed was planted.

Friends-a-Foot is for women who are already somewhat fit and can walk 5 or more miles, most are in the time of life where they are free of heavy domestic responsibilities.  The group grows by word of mouth through friends, neighbors and acquaintances of those walking.

Walks are generally scheduled on a monthly basis and whoever is free to walk at that time is welcomed to join in.  Walks take place in the Tidewater area, Washington D.C. or other researched walks in Virginia.  Generally the length varies from 5 miles to 12 miles per day.  Examples of walks taken are C&O Canal tow path in D.C., Blue Ridge Parkway of Virginia which included parts of the Appalachian Trail, Noland Trail in Newport News as well as Newport News Park and Yorktown Battlefield areas.  Occasionally there is an overnight planned for longer distances.

There is no fee for joining in the walks.  Of course any expenses incurred in a walk or overnight are the responsibility of the walker.

We walk because we enjoy it.  This is very simple.  The benefits of being in nature, being with old friends and meeting new friends, breathing deeply of fresh air, viewing the beauty of surroundings,  finding time for quiet or quietly chatting with fellow walkers are all reasons to take the time..
